It goes without saying that we are also incredibly lucky to have access to an abundance of technology, which in many cases is the only way to keep in touch with family, friends and business partners during this time.
Best Apps To Keep You Connected
Zoom (Free Basic package; Android iOS, Windows)
Zoom is a cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, collaboration, chat, and webinars across mobile devices, desktops, telephones, and room systems.
The basic package allows you to get your team or your family together on video (up to 100 participants) and makes it a perfect communication app for collaborating and keeping in touch.
Skype (Free; Android, iOS, Windows)
Skype has been around for over 16 years so chances are, you have heard about it. It offers video, audio, and text communication apps available across multiple platforms. Free to download and use, for the most part, Skype is an excellent tool for keeping in touch with friends or working remotely with colleagues. For a fee, you can also use Skype to call phones or send SMS messages.
FaceTime (Free; iOS)
FaceTime allows you to make audio and Video calls. It is an App that was developed by Apple, which means that as standard it is only available on iOS devices, such as iPhones, iPods and Mac computers. Equally, the platform will only allow you to contact someone who also has a device that supports FaceTime.
Discord (Free; Android, iOS, Windows)
Discord is a communication App generally used by those that connect over their love of video games, but it is also an excellent way to keep in touch with your friends and family. It offers several services such as form based chat, voice chat and video options for one to one and group connections.
WhatsApp (Free; Android , iOS, Windows)
WhatsApp is a Facebook owned messaging App that uses your device’s connection (such as WiFi) to facilitate messaging and voice calling to nearly anyone on the planet, alone or in a group. It offers several excellent services such as messaging, audio and video calls.
Viber ( Free; Android, IOS, Windows)
Viber is a platform that offers audio, video calls and messaging. It works on both mobile and computer and can be used to connect with people around the world. Viber also offers free group chats for up to 200 participants.
Slack (Free basic package; Android, iOS, Windows)
Slack is primarily used in commercial settings to help teams collaborate, however it is equally useful for individuals to keep in touch with friends or coworkers. It’s a popular and well-crafted communication App offering instant messaging, file transfers, conferencing and much more. It has many features and integrations with other tools. Basic subscription is free, making it perfect for smaller teams and individuals.
Google Hangouts (Free; Android, iOS, Windows)
Google Hangouts offers text, voice, or video chats, either individually or in a group. Hangouts integrates seamlessly with Gmail, YouTube, and Google Voice, plus there are Hangouts apps for iOS, Android, and the web. It is a useful and cost-effective platform for individuals as well as business customers.
3CX (Free basic package; Android, iOS, Windows)
The 3CX standard licence software includes features enabling you to make and receive calls, access and view the status of other colleagues, chat, conduct conference calls, all from your usual smartphone device or PC/Laptop based browser. Microsoft Teams (Free -Requires Office 365)
Microsoft Teams is the complete collaboration tool enabling both office based and remote staff to collaborate with individuals or designated groups of employees within online workspaces within the application. If you routinely use Office 365, you will likely have access to Microsoft Teams as part of the service package. Teams is Cloud based, so it can be accessed anywhere on Windows, Mac, as well as iOS and Android – all you need is a connection to the internet.
